RestroFood lets you add extra options to your products, like sauces or sides. You can set these up in one of two ways: Global Add-ons, which you build once and reuse on many products, or Add Features, which you build separately on each product. Both use a simple checkbox or radio list.
Before you start, you need to pick which method you want to use. One setting decides this for your whole store.
Step 1: Choose Global or Individual Add-Ons
Go to RestroFood General Settings > General tab in your WordPress admin. Find the Product Extra Add-Ons dropdown and choose one of two options:
- Global – extras are created once and can be reused across multiple products.
- On Individual Product – extras are built separately for each product and don’t carry over.
If you sell the same extras on many items (like sauces or seasonings), pick Global. If only a few products need special extras, pick On Individual Product.
Step 2: Set Up Global Add-Ons
If you selected Global, create your reusable extras from the WordPress admin sidebar under Products > Add-ons.
- Click Add New Add-on.
- Enter a Name (how it appears on the product page) and a Slug (the URL-friendly version).
- Under Extra Add-Ons, choose the List Type: Checkbox for multi-select extras or Radio for a single exclusive choice.
- Set the Feature minimum required number and Feature max required number if the customer must select from this add-on. Leave both blank to keep it optional.
- Enter a Feature Title and Price for each option, then click Add to add more option rows.
- Click Add New Add-on to save it.
Once saved, the add-on appears in your Add-ons list (for example, “Add Sauce?” and “Add Seasonings?”) and is ready to attach to any product.
Step 3: Apply Global Add-Ons to a Product
Open the product you want to customize and look for the Add-ons panel in the sidebar of the product editor.
- Under the All Add-Ons tab, check the box next to each add-on you want to attach to this product (for example, “Add Sauce?” or “Add Seasonings?”).
- Use the Most Used tab to quickly find add-ons you attach often.
- Click + Add New Add-on from this panel if you need to create another one without leaving the product screen.
- Update or publish the product.
The selected add-ons now appear on that product’s front-end page for customers to choose from.
Step 4: Set Up Individual Product Add-Ons (Add Features)
If you selected On Individual Product in Step 1, product-specific extras are built through the Add Features tab instead of the Add-ons panel.
- Go to Products > Add New (or edit an existing product).
- In the Product data panel on the left, click the Add Features tab.
- Click Add Group to start a new set of extras for this product.
- Configure the group:
- List Type – Checkbox or Radio.
- Feature Section Title – the label customers see for this group (e.g., “Choose your sauce”).
- Feature minimum required number and Feature max required number – set these if the group is mandatory; leave blank if it’s optional.
- Feature Title and Price – add one row per option, using Add to insert more rows.
- Click Add Group again if the product needs a second, separate set of extras, or Remove Group to delete one.
- Publish or update the product.
Because these groups are built per product, they don’t appear anywhere else, useful when a product needs extras no other item on your menu uses.
Required vs. Optional Add-Ons
In both Global and Individual setups, the List Type and the minimum/maximum required number fields work together to control whether a selection is mandatory:
- Leave the minimum and maximum fields blank, and the add-on group is optional – customers can add the product to their cart without choosing anything.
- Set a minimum of 1 or higher, and customers must make a selection from that group before they can add the product to their cart.
- The maximum field caps how many options a customer can pick, which matters most for Checkbox groups where multiple selections are otherwise allowed.
Radio lists are naturally single-select, so the min/max fields on a Radio group mainly control whether making that one choice is required.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Where do I turn on Global add-ons in RestroFood?
Go to General Settings > General tab and set the Product Extra Add-Ons From dropdown to Global. This makes the Add-ons panel available on every product’s edit screen so you can attach shared extras instead of building them individually.
Where do I create a new Global add-on?
Global add-ons are created under Products > Add-ons in the WordPress admin sidebar, not inside the General Settings page. From there, click Add New Add-on, set the list type, options, and pricing, then save it.
What’s the difference between Add-ons and Add Features?
Add-ons are Global extras created once under Products > Add-ons and attached to any product by checking a box. Add Features are extras built directly on a single product’s edit screen and only apply to that product.
Can I make an extra option mandatory?
Yes. Set the Feature minimum required number to 1 or higher on either a Global add-on or an Add Features group. Leaving the minimum and maximum blank keeps the selection optional.
What list types can I use for extras?
RestroFood add-on builder offers two list types: Checkbox, for letting customers pick more than one option, and Radio, for a single exclusive choice such as a size or spice level.
Can one product have more than one set of extras?
Yes, when using Add Features in Individual mode. Click Add Group to add another separate section with its own title, list type, and options, and use Remove Group to remove one.
